Analysts at three major commodity research houses upgraded their Ukrainian and Romanian wheat output forecasts following favorable rainfall across the southern plains in June and July. The revised Bulgarian harvest estimate now stands at 6.8 million metric tonnes, up from the initial April projection of 6.4 million MT — the highest output since 2021.
The upward revision has put pressure on nearby FOB Varna prices, with December delivery wheat trading approximately USD 8/MT below the August contract high. Black Sea exporters are competing aggressively for Q4 tender business from Egypt's GASC, which has issued three purchase tenders in the past six weeks.
X.C.O Market Commentary — August 2025
Black Sea wheat basis has tightened materially following the upward revision to Bulgarian and Romanian crop estimates. FOB Varna differentials have compressed to their narrowest in 18 months, suggesting strong buying interest from North African importers ahead of the autumn procurement season. Sunflower oil spreads remain constructive on the back of lower Ukrainian crush margins. We expect limited spot availability in September; buyers are advised to conclude Q4 coverage now.
